Ballantyne OT

Calm, grounded occupational therapy that supports meaningful participation in daily living.

Neuro- and sensory-informed occupational therapy for children and adults across the greater Hazyview region.

What we do?

Ballantyne Occupational Therapy provides evidence-informed occupational therapy services that support regulation, function, and participation in everyday life.

Therapy is grounded in careful assessment, clinical reasoning, and an understanding of the nervous system, with a strong focus on supporting individuals to engage meaningfully at home, school, work, and within their communities.

Services are offered to children, adolescents, and adults, with support tailored to each person’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals.

Services

Adult Therapy

Ballantyne Occupational Therapy provides occupational therapy services for adults experiencing neurological conditions, physical injury, mental health challenges, and difficulties with functional independence.

Adult therapy focuses on supporting participation in daily activities such as self-care, mobility, work, and community engagement. Intervention is guided by careful assessment, clinical reasoning, and a strong understanding of how neurological injury and illness impact function.

Tamsin has completed Bobath training in adult neurological rehabilitation, which informs her approach to working with individuals following stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other neurological conditions. Therapy is practical, goal-directed, and responsive to the individual’s environment and priorities.

Support may include rehabilitation of upper limb function, activities of daily living, cognitive and perceptual challenges, fatigue management, environmental adaptations, and graded return to work or meaningful activity.

Paediatric Therapy

Paediatric occupational therapy services support children who experience challenges with development, sensory processing, emotional regulation, motor skills, learning, and participation in daily life.

Tamsin has a strong interest in neurodevelopment and is particularly passionate about working with children with cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental delays. Intervention is grounded in an understanding of the developing nervous system and the importance of regulation, movement, and meaningful engagement.

She is currently enrolled in the South African Institute of Sensory Integration (SAISI) programme and has completed training in Ayres Sensory Integration-informed practice. This supports a thoughtful, evidence-informed approach to assessing and addressing sensory integration and praxis difficulties.

Therapy is individualised, play-based where appropriate, and always focused on supporting the child within their real-life contexts, including home, school, and community environments.

Neonatal Therapy

Neonatal occupational therapy services support infants and families during the early stages of development, particularly where there are medical complexities or developmental risk factors.

Tamsin has completed training in General Movements Assessment (GMA) and has experience working with complex neonates, including infants born prematurely or with medical and neurological challenges. Her approach prioritises gentle handling, observation, and support of early regulation, posture, and movement patterns.

Intervention focuses on supporting early development, feeding, positioning, sensory regulation, and parent education. Care is always delivered in a calm, respectful, and family-centred manner, recognising the vulnerability of both infant and caregivers during this period.

Early identification and support are key, and therapy aims to optimise developmental outcomes while empowering parents with knowledge and confidence.

About the therapist

Tamsin Ballantyne

Tamsin Ballantyne is an occupational therapist providing neuro- and sensory-informed occupational therapy services for children, adults, and families across the Lowveld.

She holds a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from Stellenbosch University, where she developed a strong foundation in clinical reasoning, evidence-informed practice, and person-centred care. Tamsin completed her community service year at Mokopane Regional Hospital, gaining valuable experience working in a resource-limited public healthcare setting with a diverse patient population. This period shaped her practical, adaptable, and collaborative approach to therapy.

Tamsin has a special interest in neurodevelopment, sensory integration, and neurological rehabilitation across the lifespan. She has completed Bobath training in adult neurological rehabilitation, which informs her work with individuals following stroke and other neurological conditions. She is currently enrolled with the South African Institute of Sensory Integration (SAISI) and has completed training in Ayres Sensory Integration-informed practice.

Her paediatric work is grounded in a deep passion for supporting children with cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental delays, with therapy focused on regulation, movement, participation, and functional independence. Tamsin also has training in General Movements Assessment (GMA) and experience working with complex neonates, supporting early identification, gentle intervention, and family-centred care.

Across all areas of practice, Tamsin values thoughtful assessment, respectful collaboration, and intervention that is practical, meaningful, and responsive to real-life contexts. She works closely with families, schools, and other healthcare professionals to support sustainable outcomes over time.

Testimonials from past clients

“Our family is incredibly grateful to Tamsin for identifying that our newborn had a tongue tie. This was something we would never have noticed ourselves and it was not identified by our paediatrician. Thanks to Tamsin’s careful observation and clinical insight, we were able to address the issue early and prevent a range of potential future difficulties for our little one.

Tamsin has a naturally gentle and calming way with babies and children, combined with the professional ability to recognise things that parents may easily miss. We felt supported, informed, and reassured throughout the process.

We would highly recommend her to any family.”

“After I suffered a stroke on 6 March 2022, Tamsin Ballantyne was by my side from day one. I spent four months and two days in hospital, and throughout that time, as well as after I returned home, she provided exceptional support.

Tamsin went far beyond what was expected. She helped me relearn daily tasks, manage my personal care, and gradually regain my independence. At first, I could not walk and relied on a wheelchair. Returning home felt overwhelming, especially with steps limiting my access, but Tamsin carefully planned and found a solution. That moment changed everything for me.

She is not only highly skilled as an occupational therapist, but also kind, caring, and deeply thoughtful. She treated me with dignity at every stage of my recovery, helped rebuild my confidence, and continued to guide me long after I left hospital.

Tamsin is professional, committed, and truly passionate about helping others. I can recommend her without hesitation. She is simply one of the best.”
